Honey Boo Boo, Jersey Shore, and the Sistine Chapel

Scott Jackisch (a.k.a., “Oakland Futurist Guy”) has a post up with the title, Jersey Shore is better than cat burning. Provocative? Yes. Timely? No. Jersey Shore is so 2010. We live in the age of Honey Boo Boo. This is clear from Google Trends. The red line represents searches for Honey Boo Boo, and the blue for Jersey Shore.

Mama June farting up a storm is still superior to cat burning. But about the Sistine Chapel, I’ll leave you with Mr. Jackisch’s ruminations on that and genital mutilation:

Take genital mutilation. That’s cultural. I place it right along side of the Sistine Chapel as an example of culture. Most of the Mills Students agreed that we need to take the good and leave the bad behind in regard to the old cultures. But I wonder how divisible cultural artifacts truly are. Is the Sistine Chapel integrally linked to oppression and Inquisition? Can the beauty really be expunged of the horrors that funded it and the message it inheres? Some things were lost with the passing of Culture. Some horrible things along with the great.

The question of modularity and contingency ...

Party like a Persian

MTV Not Involved With ‘Jersey Shore’ Imitations:

For the show he calls the “Persian Version,” his casting company wrote: “If you are at least 21 years old, appear younger than 30, and are outrageous, outspoken and a proud Persian-American, then Doron Ofir Casting and 495 Productions, the team who brought you ‘Jersey Shore,’ are looking for you!”

On Jersey Shore all the cast members were at least nominal Catholics (though not all were Italian American), so there was a unanimity of religious presuppositions which stood in sharp contrast to the forced pluralism evident in The Real World series. This is going to be difficult for Persian Version if they get a representative group of Iranian Americans. Rather, perhaps they can appeal to a common shared value of the need for Latoya Jackson face (the one Nowruz I’ve attended had a lot of that).

How much is “The Situation” worth?

‘Jersey Shore’ — MTV Tries to Divide and Conquer:

Sources tell TMZ the network has told the cast if they don’t accept MTV’s deal by the end of business Monday, they will be replaced. And, MTV has told them it does not have to be a package deal — the cast members who accept the offer will stay … those who do not can have a nice life.

As we first reported, MTV offered each cast member a $10,000 signing bonus and $5,000 per episode. We’re told the cast rejected the offer and made it clear they would all stand together and hold out for their price, though they didn’t say what it was.

MTV made a new offer of $10,000 an episode — there are 12 episodes in the new season — but so far the cast hasn’t responded.

We’re told MTV already has replacements if Snooki, Pauly D, The Situation and the others don’t accept the offer on Monday. But, we’re told, MTV is happy to mix and match if some of the cast accepts the offer and others don’t.

As for who’s being the most hard-headed in the negotiations — The Situation and Pauly D.
