{"id":39121,"date":"2011-03-27T13:25:50","date_gmt":"2011-03-27T21:25:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/gnxp\/?p=10548"},"modified":"2011-03-27T13:25:50","modified_gmt":"2011-03-27T21:25:50","slug":"it%e2%80%99s-about-heritability%e2%80%a6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.razib.com\/wordpress\/2011\/03\/27\/it%e2%80%99s-about-heritability%e2%80%a6\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s about heritability\u2026."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/gnxp\/files\/2011\/03\/normldist1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10556\" title=\"normldist\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/gnxp\/files\/2011\/03\/normldist1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"255\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m going to promote <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/gnxp\/2011\/03\/human-population-genetics-identity-politics\/#comment-61623\">a comment<\/a>:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>&#8230;would knowing the root biological cause for differences which are already apparent to us change anything?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s obvious to you that there\u2019s a contradiction here, but to the average educated person this makes total sense.<\/p>\n<p>The proximal reason seems to be that in thinking about \u201cgenetic\u201d and \u201cenvironmental\u201d factors, the average educated person still fundamentally <strong>views \u201cgenetics\u201d as equivalent to genetic determinism <\/strong>and \u201cenvironmental\u201d factors as equivalent to social norms or parenting tactics. In this black-and-white view of human development,<strong> quantitative distinctions and complex causal models have no place.<\/strong> Genetic causes are irremediable and ever-lasting, whereas environmental causes are a generation-away from disappearing with the right appropriations to social programs. That\u2019s why an environmental cause for phenotypic differences doesn\u2019t \u201ccount\u201d but a genetic one is game changing.<\/p>\n<p>It seems as if the nature-nurture world view painted in the 1970s by the anti-heredity crowd has remained largely intact with only minor modifications in the mind of the average educated person.
