Trainers aim to impart something they call &#8220;international culture&#8221;\u2014which is, of course, no culture at all, but a garbled hybrid of Indian and Western signifiers designed to be recognizable to everyone and familiar to no one. The result is a comically botched translation\u2014a multibillion dollar game of telephone. &#8220;The most marketable skill in India today,&#8221; the Guardian wrote in 2003, &#8220;is the ability to abandon your identity and slip into someone else&#8217;s.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The writer&#8217;s background is interesting:<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"more-3946\"><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;ve completed a four-year university?&#8221; the recruiter asked, pen poised above my r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes,&#8221; I said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And your stream?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Pardon?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She sighed. &#8220;What did you study?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Religion,&#8221; I said. &#8220;Well\u2014liberal arts.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She made a face, scribbling something.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What does your father do?&#8221; she asked.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s a doctor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And your mother is a housewife?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No, a doctor also.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A doctor also! Why didn&#8217;t you go in for that line?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8230;I didn&#8217;t want to,&#8221; I said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You didn&#8217;t want to?&#8221; She could no longer hide her exasperation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These things are different in America,&#8221; I said feebly.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There&#8217;s an implicit subtext here that a modern global economy and affluence come at the cost of Indian culture and  familial closeness.
