{"id":48754,"date":"2011-10-23T15:57:24","date_gmt":"2011-10-23T23:57:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/gnxp\/?p=14257"},"modified":"2011-10-23T15:57:24","modified_gmt":"2011-10-23T23:57:24","slug":"the-otzi-embargo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.razib.com\/wordpress\/2011\/10\/23\/the-otzi-embargo\/","title":{"rendered":"The \u00d6tzi embargo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/dienekes.blogspot.com\/2011\/10\/citizen-genetics.html\">Dienekes<\/a> has some harsh words for the way <em>some<\/em> science is produced, focusing on the genome of \u00d6tzi the Iceman as a case in point:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Yesterday, I\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/dienekesp\/status\/127795893738024960\">twitted<\/a>\u00a0in exasperation that Otzi&#8217;s genome, which must have been available in at least some sort of draft form since at least the beginning of this year, has been under lock and key, presumably because of the need to make a big splash with the simultaneous Bolzano\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dienekes.blogspot.com\/2011\/10\/tyrolean-iceman-week-is-upon-us-and.html\">conference<\/a>, TV\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/dienekes.blogspot.com\/2011\/10\/iceman-stories-begin-arriving.html\">special<\/a>, likely imminent journal publication, and all the media stories that will follow.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What I don&#8217;t understand: how come no one is editing the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%96tzi_the_Iceman#Genetic_analysis\">Wikipedia entry ahead of time<\/a>? I wonder in hindsight if there&#8217;s no there, there, though I hope I&#8217;m wrong about this.
