In particular, making sure that the donations don&#8217;t go toward religious or Leftist ends. My own <strong>personal<\/strong> assumption is in line with the recommendations of the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.givewell.net\/2010\/01\/13\/haiti-earthquake-donations\/\">The GiveWell Blog<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>A few notes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unfortunately, \u201cdisaster relief\u201d is not an area we\u2019ve researched. When we\u2019ve (very briefly) looked into the cause of \u201cdisaster relief\u201d in the past, we haven\u2019t found substantive, well-supported, specific recommendations for where to give. More at two posts from May 2008, following the cyclone in Burma:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.givewell.net\/2008\/05\/07\/cyclone-relief-recommendation-and-questions\/\">Cyclone Relief: Recommendation and Questions<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.givewell.net\/2008\/05\/12\/emergency-assistance-for-donors\/\">Emergency Assistance for Donors<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>According to the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.givewell.net\/international\/technical\/criteria\/program-evaluation#DiseaseControlPrioritiesReport\">Disease Control Priorities Project<\/a>, emergency aid is one of the worst uses of donations, despite being one of the most emotionally compelling. For more, see our post on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.givewell.net\/2008\/08\/29\/the-case-against-disaster-relief\/\">the cost-effectiveness of disaster-focused aid<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Our intuition then, as it is now, is that the most effective way to help those in need is to give to effective\u00a0<em>organizations<\/em>. A few of our recommended organizations have a presence in Haiti:\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.givewell.net\/international\/top-charities\/stop-TB\">The Stop TB Partnership<\/a> provides tuberculosis drugs in Haiti.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.givewell.net\/international\/top-charities\/PSI\">Population Services International<\/a> has worked in Haiti\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/psi.org\/where-we-work\/countries\/haiti\">since 1989<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.givewell.net\/international\/top-charities\/PIH\">Partners in Health\u2019s<\/a> flagship clinic is\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pih.org\/where\/Haiti\/Haiti.html\">located in Haiti<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What do readers think about this? It seems that the Haitian Earthquake is a major disaster in part because of long-term structural issues.
