This issue is particularly famous for Mona Eltahaway&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foreignpolicy.com\/articles\/2012\/04\/23\/why_do_they_hate_us?page=0,0\">jeremiad<\/a> against Arab male culture, and their attitudes toward women. Over at <a href=\"http:\/\/bloggingheads.tv\/videos\/9589?in=01:29&amp;out=07:06\">bloggingheads.tv<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/bloggingheads.tv\/videos\/9589?in=01:29&amp;out=07:06\">Charli Carpenter<\/a> expresses some concern that the issue seemed so singularly focused on Arabs, as if women&#8217;s rights is a problem with particular salience for Arab Muslims. As it is, she admits that as a matter of truth it may be so, but still has qualms about essentialization.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I like to think in terms of distributions, and don&#8217;t find essentialization particularly useful on a fundamental level. <strong>But, my personal observation is that the term &#8216;essentialization&#8217; tends to be used when there are phenomena brought to light which make people uncomfortable.<\/strong> For example, I rarely hear essentialization being nearly a great a problem when talking about Republicans or Western Christian conservatives.<\/p>\n<p>But it does make to wonder: <strong>how bad are Arab countries when it comes to women&#8217;s rights?<\/strong> Let&#8217;s look at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wvsevsdb.com\/wvs\/WVSAnalizeIndex.jsp\">World Values Survey<\/a>. There are two questions in the survey which have a lot of normative baggage:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; If jobs are scarce: men should have more right to a job than women<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; It is an &#8230;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/feeds.feedburner.com\/~r\/GeneExpressionBlog\/~4\/i7m5dqWYYZU\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The magazine Foreign Policy recently had a &#8220;sex&#8221; issue out.
