{"id":71569,"date":"2012-06-23T21:26:47","date_gmt":"2012-06-24T05:26:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.discovermagazine.com\/gnxp\/?p=17002"},"modified":"2012-06-23T21:26:47","modified_gmt":"2012-06-24T05:26:47","slug":"sex-sport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.razib.com\/wordpress\/2012\/06\/23\/sex-sport\/","title":{"rendered":"Sex &amp; sport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i>The New York Times<\/i> has an article up on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/06\/24\/sports\/olympics\/ioc-adopts-policy-for-deciding-whether-athletes-can-compete-as-women.html?hp&#038;pagewanted=print\">new I.O.C. ruling<\/a> on who can compete as a woman. Basically they look at testosterone levels. This seems a different tack than cases where women were banned from competing as women <a href=\"http:\/\/zagria.blogspot.com\/2009\/08\/maria-jose-martinez-patino-1961-athlete.html\">because they had a male karytoptype<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Androgen_insensitivity_syndrome\">AIS<\/a>). This article came on my radar because I had already read this op-ed from about a week ago, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/06\/18\/sports\/olympics\/olympic-sex-verification-you-say-youre-a-woman-that-should-be-enough.html\">You Say You\u2019re a Woman? That Should Be Enough<\/a>. This sentence jumped out at me:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Second, when it comes to sex, sports authorities should acknowledge that while science can offer evidence, it cannot dictate what evidence we should use.<b> Scientifically, there is no clear or objective way to draw a bright line between male and female.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What do people think of this assertion? I&#8217;m aware of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Intersex\">intersex<\/a> individuals. But if we start to assert that <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dioecy\">dioecy<\/a> is just a &#8220;social construct&#8221; then let&#8217;s revisit <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Species\">species concepts<\/a>. I&#8217;m sure there are some farmers and loggers who might assert that one can&#8217;t draw objective bright lines between populations.
